3. How to Get a Free OpenRouter API Key
Follow these steps to create your own OpenRouter API key. You can start without a subscription or payment card, and OpenRouter currently provides free models with limited usage.
- Create an account: Visit OpenRouter.ai and sign up or log in.
- Open the API Keys page: From your OpenRouter dashboard, go to the API Keys section and choose Create Key.
- Name your key: Give it a simple name such as
AI Math Tutor, then create the key. - Copy the key: Copy the generated key immediately and keep it private. Do not post it publicly or share it with anyone.
- Choose a free model: In the model field of this tool, enter a current free model ID ending in
:free, or useopenrouter/freefor automatic free-model routing. - Enter the key here: Select OpenRouter, paste your API key into the API Key field, enter the model ID, and click Save Settings if available.
- Test the tool: Enter a simple equation such as
2x + 5 = 15and click Solve Step-by-Step.
Important: Free models have usage/rate limits. OpenRouter's current Free plan lists free-model API access and a limit of up to 50 requests per day; availability and limits can change.
4. Free Models & Image Support
For typed math, you can use a free text-capable model. For drawing or picture upload, the selected model must support image input. The openrouter/free router can automatically select an available free model that supports the features required by the request, including image understanding.
- Text only: Use a free text/reasoning model from OpenRouter's Free Models list.
- Images: Use
openrouter/freeor another free model that explicitly supports image input. - Model availability: Free model availability can change, so check OpenRouter's current model list if a model stops working.
5. Pedagogical Standards

6. Privacy & Security
